U.S. Dancers to China

Berea College Country Dancers have a story to tell. It is a story of racial integration, simple living, hard work, and celebration of the rich fabric of Appalachian American culture woven from African, European, and Native American threads.  The story is told through music, song, and dance.
Supported by a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State, the Berea College Country Dancers will take their performance art to China in May of 2017.  Thirteen students, staff, and musicians representing Berea College will offer daily performances as well as lectures, workshops, music jams, and community dances during eight days of artistic residency at two locations.
The first artistic residency will be held at the Linden Centre, a center for cultural exchange, international education, and heritage preservation in a remote part of Yunnan Province, in China’s southwest region. The second residency will be hosted by Yunnan Arts University in Kunming, southeast China’s top university for traditional music and dance.  Because Yunnan Province is home to many Asian ethnic minorities, the young artists from Appalachia will underline the value of minority cultures both in the U.S. and China.
